Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant: On the brink of a repeat of Ukraine’s Chernobyl disaster, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant cuts power again.

Zaporizhia: Ukraine’s and Europe’s largest nuclear plant was shut down again early Saturday after a critical power line was destroyed by shells fired deep inside the plant’s compound. Russian-backed local officials gave this information. The claims of heavy shelling came a day after a team of inspectors from the United Nations nuclear watchdog arrived at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) mission is to help secure the plant, as Russia and Ukraine blame each other for shelling around the nuclear plant.

Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Russian regional administration, wrote on Telegram that the Deprovskaya power line had been damaged. A nuclear power plant has been commissioned to meet its needs. He further wrote that a sphere got stuck between the two reactors. Their claims could not be immediately confirmed. Late Friday evening, Russian-backed officials said the plant had been on fire for about two hours. He has once again blamed the Ukrainian military for this. However, as of Saturday morning neither the Ukrainian government nor the country’s nuclear power operator, Enerhoytam, had commented on the allegations.

The plant has repeatedly lost contact with Ukraine’s power grid over the past week, and Enerhotem has blamed mortar shelling and fires near the site. In Zorya, a small village about 20 kilometers from the Zaporizhzhya plant, residents heard explosions in the area on Friday. Villagers do not fear shelling as much as the risk of radioactive leaks from the plant.

During the first week of the war, officials provided iodine pills and masks to people living near the plant in case they were exposed to radioactive radiation. Recently, they have also distributed iodine tablets in the town of Zaporizhzhya, about 50 kilometers from the plant. Russian forces launched shelling and missile attacks on residential areas in eastern and northeastern Ukraine, local officials said on Saturday.
