T20 World Cup: Australian team in trouble, match winner player has corona virus, he has no backup

Melbourne: Wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade has become the second player from the reigning champions to test positive for Covid-19 ahead of Australia’s crucial T20 World Cup match against England. The 34-year-old Wade, the only wicketkeeper in the 15-man squad, is showing mild symptoms but is likely to play against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). International Cricket Council (ICC) rules do not prevent a player from participating in a match if he is found to be Covid-19 positive.

Wade did not take part in Australia’s optional indoor training session on Thursday. If he does not play in this match, David Warner or Glenn Maxwell are expected to take over the wicket-keepership against England. Maxwell practiced wicketkeeping during practice.

Captain Aaron Finch has already said that Warner can take over as wicketkeeper if needed. Wade is the second Australian player to test positive for Covid this week. Earlier, spinner Adam Zampa was tested positive for Covid on Tuesday and did not play in Australia’s last match.

Australia do or die match

This Group-1 match between Australia and England is crucial for both the teams as the losing team will almost be out of the race for the knockout stage of the tournament. Hosts Australia suffered a crushing defeat against New Zealand in their very first match of the tournament. In such a situation, the Australian team will not want to take any risk against England.

In this phase of Super-12, however, the team won against Sri Lanka after losing the first match. Along with this, after the match against England, the Australian team is facing two light teams. In such a case, he will try to strengthen his position here.

After the match against England, Australia have two more matches against Ireland and Afghanistan.
