MUMBAI: Mumbai DCP sends money from hawala to Lucknow, sensational revelation in Angria case

According to a source, on the instructions of DCP Saurabh Tripathi, one of the arrested inspectors, Om Wanggate, used to send most of the money looted or demanded for ransom from people associated with the Angria business through hawala.

Saurabh Tripathi is a resident of Kanpur. He has several relatives in Lucknow. Therefore, in this case, it is very important to come up with a link to the hawala network from Lucknow. So far, three inspectors Nitin Kadam, Samadh Jamdade and Om Wangte have been arrested in the case. Saurabh Tripathi has filed an anticipatory bail petition in the court to avoid his arrest. The case is set to be heard on March 24. The CIU had in its previous remand application said that the three inspectors arrested in the case belonged to LT Marg police station. Saurabh Tripathi was the DCP of the zone at the time of collection. He had verbally instructed his inspectors to collect money from people involved in the Angria business.

The case came to light when on December 2, 2021, seven to eight police personnel took several people involved in Angria’s business to the Mumba Devi Beat outpost. Those who had cash of Rs 5 lakh took Rs 50,000 and those who had cash of Rs 10 lakh or more took Rs 1 to 2 lakh. When it was reconvened on December 3 and 4, two members of the Angria Association met Saurabh Tripathi, DCP of Zone II. It is alleged that when Saurabh Tripathi demanded Rs 10 lakh from him every month, a complaint was lodged with the Commissioner of Police. Dilip Sawant, Additional CP, Southern Region, was then asked to investigate the allegations. An FIR was then registered on Sawant’s investigation report.
