According to scientists, the mood of the monsoon has changed due to the change in the weather. In particular, there is a wide gap in rainfall distribution. This time, Maharashtra received less rainfall in June, while Assam received so much rain that floods wreaked havoc. The definition of normal monsoon needs to be changed in view of the recent monsoon conditions. More than 40 per cent of the country’s sowing is dependent on monsoon rains. Changes in the monsoon are affecting farmers and our food security. Monsoon is very important for India. It also affects our economy.
Set many records
Assam-Meghalaya has received the highest rainfall in 121 years, while Kerala has received the fourth lowest rainfall in 121 years. The monsoon rainfall in June 2022 was eight percent less than the average, but the distribution of rainfall was quite surprising:
- The country received 152.3 mm of rainfall.
- This time Ames-Meghalaya received 858.1 mm of rainfall.
- Kerala received 308.7 mm of rainfall. This is the fourth lowest rainfall since 1901.
- Eastern and north-eastern India received 22 per cent more rainfall than normal.
- Central India received 30 per cent less rainfall.
Out of 548 meteorological stations, 40 received heavy to very heavy rainfall (above 204.5 mm), while 97 stations received 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm and 411 64.5 mm to 115.6 mm rainfall. On June 30, the first day of the monsoon, the capital Delhi received 116.6 mm of rainfall. But since then, the capital has been thirsty for rain. Hummus and scorching heat have made people miserable.
How many uncertainties
A report by the Council for Energy Environment and Water states that 75 per cent of India’s districts are hotspots for the monsoon and 40 per cent of them have different monsoon patterns. According to a 2020 report by the World Meteorological Organization, disasters such as cyclones, floods and droughts have cost India more than Rs 7 lakh crore. Many states in India are currently beset by monsoon uncertainty. 463 monsoon-related districts are at risk.
Migration from agriculture
The condition of the agriculture sector is deteriorating due to the change in rainfall patterns. People involved in agriculture are migrating. To address this, we need to increase our flexibility. At the same time, new crops have to be selected, which can be grown even in the changing seasons. The crop season should be shifted back and forth according to the changes in the rainy season. According to scientists, the change in monsoon is due to the change in sea surface temperature.
Changes in monsoon patterns
According to scientists, the pattern of monsoons in South Asia has changed since the 1950s. The most important change is that now the monsoon season comes after a long dry period of sudden heavy rains. It is to be noted that with one degree rise in temperature, the amount of rainfall increases by seven per cent. During monsoon it goes up to 10%. That is why there is a possibility of heavy rains in South Asia.
