IPL: Sunrisers Hyderabad promoted batting coach Brian Lara, got bigger responsibility

New Delhi: Legendary batsman Brian Lara has been appointed by Sunrisers Hyderabad as their head coach for the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will replace former Australian cricketer Tom Moody. This will be the 53-year-old Lara’s first stint as the head coach of the T20 team. The former West Indies captain joined Sunrisers as a strategic advisor and batting coach in December last year.

Sunrisers Hyderabad announced the appointment of Brian Lara as the head coach in a post on social media. The franchise wrote on its Twitter handle, ‘Great cricketer Brian Lara will be our head coach for the upcoming IPL season. One of the most successful batsmen in cricket history, Lara retired from international cricket in 2007.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Moody’s and Sunrisers have mutually decided to part ways. Moody’s had a successful stint with Sunrisers from 2013 to 2019. Meanwhile, the team reached the playoffs five times and became the champion in 2016. The franchise thanked Moody’s on Twitter.

He was replaced as head coach by Australian Trevor Bayliss in 2020 but Moody returned to the Sunrisers as director last year. Later he was appointed as the head coach. Moody’s second stint as head coach was not successful and his team finished eighth out of 10 teams that year. Moody will now take over as the Director of Cricket for the UAE’s new T20 League team, the Desert Vipers.
