India T20 World Cup: India boycotted practice over sandwich controversy? Know the whole truth here

Sydney: Cold sandwiches and fruit after a hard training session were not enough nutrition for some of the players in the Indian cricket team and many chose to go back to the hotel instead of eating. The Indian players preferred hot food, which is considered essential after a tough training session, and was not part of the menu on Tuesday. Instead, the players were served cold sandwiches, fruit plus falafel (a dish made from spicy chickpeas or other pulses).

It is understood that post-practice meal arrangements are almost the same for all teams. The Indian team management rested all the fast bowlers, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya, batsman Suryakumar Yadav and spinner Akshar Patel also did not participate in the optional practice session. After working through a tough training session, the players probably expected a full meal.

A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official with knowledge of the matter said on condition of anonymity, “It is not like any kind of boycott.” Some of the players took fruits and vegetables but everyone wanted to have lunch and so they went back to the hotel and ate. He said, ‘The problem is that the ICC (International Cricket Council) is not providing hot food. In bilateral series, the host association takes care of the catering and they always provide hot Indian food after the training session but for ICC, the rules are same for all the countries.

“After two hours of hard training, you can’t eat a cold sandwich (not even grilled) with avocado, tomato and cucumber,” the official said. In simple terms it is insufficient nutrition.’ The ICC said that they are investigating the matter and promised to resolve the matter soon. An ICC source said, “Yes, the Indian team has told us about their food problem after practice. We are working to resolve the matter.

It will be interesting to see if the BCCI takes any action if the issue is not resolved and arranges hot Indian food for the upcoming training sessions. The Indian team will not practice on Wednesday as the scheduled practice venue is about 40 km away from Sydney and the players are not preferring such a long journey a day before the match.
