The Railway Board on Friday directed the Railways to make all possible efforts to ensure provision of free human assistance and wheelchairs to differently-abled persons at its stations. A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramaniam Prasad sought a fresh status report from the authorities regarding the earlier orders of reserving lower seats for differently abled persons as well as providing free assistance to them and said that such facilities Should be provided at least at less busy stations.
This order was given by the High Court in 2017 on a public interest petition. The court had taken cognizance of a report in which a blind person could not appear in his M.Phil entrance examination simply because he could not get into the reserved compartment as it was locked from inside. “The respondent will also make every effort to ensure that free human assistance and wheelchairs are available to the disabled persons,” the bench said.
In July 2017, the High Court had taken cognizance of a report in which the door of a special compartment reserved for the differently abled in the Gorakhdham Express had been closed, resulting in the person being M.Phil. missed appearing in the exam.
