Accurate prediction difficult … Why aren’t 80 per cent clouds in Delhi’s sky again?

New Delhi: The recent rain forecast by the Meteorological Department (IMD) has proved to be wrong. This is especially the case with Delhi. With the weather forecast not being accurate, M Ravichandran, secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences, said on Monday that high-frequency observations were needed to better understand the motion of the clouds. He added that there was no science yet to predict the occurrence of excessive local rainfall.

“We really need more science,” Ravichandran said. We need more high frequency observations for better forecasts, especially for a state like Delhi. He said that Delhi is a meeting place for east winds. It is always difficult to make accurate predictions for this border area. Ravichandran said there was 80 per cent cloud cover in the National Capital Region but no rain.
Amarnath yatra news: Floods due to heavy rains, not due to cloudburst near Amarnath cave, Meteorological Department claims
He said that if it had been the same in the hilly areas then it would have rained. He said that a better understanding of cloud dynamics was needed for high frequency weather monitoring and better forecasting for Delhi. The geology secretary said there was no science yet to predict the occurrence of heavy local rains, which led to a tragedy at the Amarnath cave temple on Friday evening in which 17 people were killed.

We do not have the science to predict local heavy rainfall in various places. Like earthquakes, we do not have the science to predict rain.

M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Department of Earth Sciences

For the past few weeks, the rain forecast released by the Meteorological Department in the national capital has not been fulfilled. Monday’s forecast by the meteorological department was far from accurate, with some rain forecast for Saturday.
